Best Neutral Density (ND) filters for shooting long exposures at 01:00 AM?

How to handle high solar reflection on Arctic fjord water when ambient light matches 2:00 PM brightness.

Original Inquiry by @SolarChaser99:
"Heading to Senja and Tromsø this June. At midnight, the sun is only ~3.5° above the sea horizon, but because there are zero clouds and high atmospheric refraction, water glare is intense. Should I carry a 6-stop or a 10-stop ND filter if I want to achieve 15–30 second glassy water exposures at 01:00 AM? Any color cast issues with circular polarizers at high latitudes?"

I strongly recommend a high-quality 6-stop (ND64) over a 10-stop for midnight shooting. Around 00:30–01:30 AM, you get that glorious golden rim light. A 10-stop will push your exposures too long (over 2 minutes at f/11), causing the dynamic golden ripples on the water to wash out completely. A 6-stop with a circular polarizer gives you the perfect 20-second sweet spot.

Keep in mind that at 69° N, Brewster's angle polarization changes because the sunlight enters through a much thicker airmass (roughly 5.6x airmass vs zenith). A magnetic circular polarizer will deepen the blue/purple zenith while preserving the intense amber on the horizon.

Seconding Erik's advice! Just shot at Tungeneset on Senja last solstice. Bring a sturdy lens hood because side glare from the low sun across the fjords causes serious chromatic flares if you shoot wide-angle without shading.

"We are planning a 10-day wild tenting expedition across Lofoten and Kvaløya in mid-June. Because it never gets dark, we want to hike between 22:00 and 03:00 to avoid midday warmth. Under Norway's Right to Roam (Allemannsretten), what are the strict rules on open fires, pitch distance from cabins, and waste disposal?"

Welcome to Norway! Key points under Allemannsretten: You must pitch your tent at least 150 meters away from the nearest inhabited house or summer cabin. Open campfires in or near forests/open ground are strictly prohibited between April 15 and September 15. Gas camping stoves are 100% permitted. Pack out every scrap of rubbish!

For midnight sun views, pitch near Reinebringen or Uttakleiv beach. The north-facing beaches get zero mountain blockage, so the sun hovers directly over the ocean at 00:00!

First-timer report: Surviving 7 days in Svalbard without losing sleep cycles

Field Report by @ChronobiologyTraveler:
"Arrived in Longyearbyen last Tuesday. The mental dissonance of seeing the sun 15 degrees in the sky at 02:00 AM gave me huge dopamine rushes on Day 1-2. By Day 3, sleep debt hit hard. Here is the protocol that saved my trip: 1) Amber glasses at 21:30, 2) 3D contoured eye mask with zero photon leakage, 3) 17°C room temperature."

Spot on! Our clinical trials at the Arctic University show that ipRGC photoreceptors react strongly to ambient morning light. By using amber lenses 2 hours prior to sleep, you allow natural melatonin synthesis despite 24-hour external lux levels exceeding 20,000 lux outside your window.

For anyone staying in rustic cabins without blackout blinds: painter’s tape with heavy aluminum foil or dark contractor bags over windows works wonders and leaves zero residue!

"Planning to drive from Fairbanks to Dawson City via the Taylor Highway and Top of the World Highway in early June. What are the border station hours at Poker Creek / Little Gold, and is the George Black Ferry across the Yukon River operating 24 hours?"

The Poker Creek border crossing opens June 1st and generally operates 08:00 to 20:00 Alaska Time. The George Black Ferry in Dawson City runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week once the river is ice-free! Crossing the ferry at 01:00 AM under golden skies is an unforgettable experience.
